Our Daterra Masterpiece has finally arrived! Last year's Laurina lot was arguably our favourite of the year, just so sweet and complex it kept you going back for brew after brew. The lower caffeine varieties tend to be prized for their increased perceived sweetness, and well, this lot was probably the sweetest espresso I had had to date. Incomes this years cupping and auction, and well we knew we wanted to grab ourselves something similar if possible, and luckily we managed with the help of our friends at DRWakefield - even with a lot fewer Masterpieces being won here in the UK we managed to grab ourselves some, although at a lower volume.
Daterra are pushing the boundaries of Brazilian coffees and changing perspectives as they go. This lot is of the rare Aramosa variety which is a naturally low caffeine variety, an Arabica and Racemosa hybrid. Daterra have been experimenting with new varietals and also with processing methods through their Masterpieces farm project in order to create unique experiences. This lot has undergone a 60 hour, natural anaerobic process.
The cup profile is intensely sweet and complex, if you had the pleasure of getting to try some of our Masterpiece last year, this follows in that vain. Another low caffeine variety, and therefore one that seems to really lean into a heavily sweet cup. The profile has us thinking of purple, with a mouthful of juicy cherries upfront, background blackberry and blueberries add depth. A tropical sweetness and creamy mouthfeel takes over in guava with high notes of violet. A limited lot, and one you want to try.
ABOUT DATERRA AND THEIR MASTERPIECES
Daterra was born out of the vision of one man to create excellence. Excellence in environmental and economic sustainability and above all else, excellence in quality. This vision has become a reality, being the first Rainforest certified farm in Brazil and later becoming the first ‘A’ grade certified farm for sustainability in the world. From the organic farm on site that is used in the meals they provide for their workers, reusable pouches and regular filtered water taps that help to reduce plastic consumption, to the work with local schools, colleges, and universities, the breadth of their ambition is clearly visible.
Each year Daterra’s masterful cuppers search the vast potential of Daterra for unique small lots of coffee, the Masterpieces. This very small farm is a lab where they test new ways of producing coffee. The lab is rich with new and unusual varietals, processing methods, drying techniques and limitless experiments. Each coffee has a unique cup profile and scores 88+, is fully traceable, planted and grown with history and can never be replicated.
This years auction and selection of masterpieces was themed on the legacy of coffee research pioneers in Brazil. All the lots were dedicated to the Brazilian researchers, scientists, geneticists and scholars whose groundbreaking work has revolutionised the world of coffee. All the profits from the auction this year were then reinvested into coffee research.
As global warming increasingly threatens coffee cultivation, the work and dedication of these exceptional individuals are more critical than ever. Genetics research is at the forefront of developing coffee varieties that can endure extreme temperatures, droughts, and diseases. Innovations in genetic improvements, combined with sustainable farming practices, are essential for maintaining coffee production and protecting the livelihoods of those who depend on it.
In this special edition, you’ll have the chance to explore exclusive coffee lots that honour these pioneers. Each lot is a tribute to the remarkable achievements and dedication of those who have advanced the field, giving you the opportunity to own a piece of coffee history! We are proud to be able to offer you this lot, from the BV24 Plot in Martinez.
